Four cyber-activists -- Scotsman Nigel Parry, American Laurie King-Irani and Palestinians Ali Abunimah and Arjan El Fassed (a political scientist and human rights specialist who resides in the Netherlands) -- decided last autumn to establish, in virtual co-operation, The Electronic Intifada. The four already had an wide network in the area through their involvement in several Palestinian websites. Question to Arjan El Fassed, of course per email: why another site next to other existing (pro-)Palestinian websites? Doesn't this lead to a dispersion of effort? Arjan El Fassed (also per email): "We deal with only one aspect, the media coverage. Other (Palestinian) websites deal mostly with other aspects (for example, al-Awda with the right to return of Palestinian refugees; Addameer with human rights and a focus on political prisoners). It doesn't lead to dispersion of effort, on the contrary, it is complementary." The website offers, according to El Fassed, both journalists and actvists easy access to information, with clear sources and links, including examples of good and bad/selective coverage. Additionally, the Electronic Intifada offers a list of potential contacts, in the Palestinian territories, as well as in the United States and Europe. "By offering alternative voices (not the usually known 'spokespersons'), mostly from a new generation, we hope to add a fresh and critical view to the existing discourse", said El Fassed. El Fassed points out that criticism on the coverage is not aimed at the source, as in the debate about the alleged bias of Jewish correspondents in Israel, after a publication in Vrij Nederland. "Some Israeli coverage, such as from Amira Hass and Gideon Levy in Ha'aretz, is better and more critical than the coverage in Dutch or U.S. newspapers."
