Coverage of January 2009 RNC Photo Exhibit in St. Paul, MN

St. Paul exhibit to display photos from GOP convention

Photographs from the Republican National Convention in St. Paul are being sought from the community for an exhibit starting Saturday at the Black Dog Cafe in Lowertown.

The "Looking Back, Moving Forward" exhibit is meant to bring people together, said Nigel Parry, who is organizing the project with the cafe.

"I think the RNC was really divisive," he said. "A lot of people were really angry by the militarization of the streets and the sense that the police were targeting everyone. The exhibit has the potential to be healing."

Parry, who lived in Lowertown at the time of the September convention and now lives in Minneapolis, said he hopes photos will be submitted by a wide array of people.

The photos will be hung along the cafe's walls from twine with binder clips. Parry said the hanging technique, and community-sharing component, was inspired by the "Here is New York" exhibit, which was in New York City after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Prints will be sold for $25 — with $5 going to the RNC Eight legal fund and the rest to the photographer. People can opt out of their photos being sold, Parry said.

The RNC Eight refers to eight people facing terrorism allegations. Police have said the eight charged defendants were members of an anarchist group that vowed to "crash the convention" and encouraged activists to prevent delegates from getting to the Xcel Energy Center.

Parry is a Web designer with a background in photography. He took pictures during the RNC protests.

Photos will be accepted until the exhibit ends Jan. 31. Submission guidelines are available at rnc08report.org.

Photographs can be e-mailed to publicity@nigelparry.net or dropped off or mailed to the Black Dog, 308 Prince St., St. Paul, MN 55101.

Photo exhibit recalls impact of the RNC

St. Paul, Minn. — A St. Paul coffee shop will display photographs of the Republican National Convention submitted by members of the public.

Organizers of the show, called "Looking Back, Moving Forward," say they already have about 50 pictures submitted for display at the Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar in Lowertown.

Curator Nigel Parry says he doesn't know how many pictures the show will attract, nor what they might show, but it's clear the RNC had an impact on the city.

"The RNC put everyone in a weird spotlight. A lot of people who have lived here for many years felt the RNC was kind of foisted on them," said Parry. "What we are trying to do is give people a place to say something in a very visual, easily understandable way."

The show is fashioned after similar exhibits in New York following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The show opens Jan. 3 and runs through the end of the month.

Members of the public can submit pictures in person, or e-mail them through a link on the Black Dog's Web site.

Eye on the RNC: Citizen photos on display

Looking for a photographic piece of RNC history?

The "Looking Back, Moving Forward" exhibition, which features photos taken by the community at large while the Republican National Convention was in St. Paul, opened over the weekend at Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar.

A Black Dog worker estimated this morning that 30 to 50 photographs are on display so far in the Lowertown St. Paul café. Even so, the show is still open for submissions, according to a statement from rnc08.org, the organizers. Proceeds from the sale of photos will go to the RNC 8 Legal Fund.

The setup of the exhibition is somewhat akin to the "Here is New York" show organized after the 9/11 tragedy, according to rnc08report.org, "because anyone and everyone who had taken pictures relating to the tragedy was invited to submit their images to the gallery, to be displayed on the walls alongside the work of top photojournalists and other professional photographers."

The show runs through Jan. 31. You can see some of the photos on display here as well as obtain information about how to submit your own photos.
