1 October 2000 - September 2000 Clashes Information Center - Palestinian human rights center Addameer has an ongoing, on the ground reporting project with the latest information on the September/October 2000 clashes in Palestine, which will be updated several times daily during the duration of the clashes.

29 August 2000 - Phoenix in Dheisheh - Unknown persons burnt down the Internet center in Dheisheh Refugee Camp (see 25 July and 24 August news items below).

10 December 1999 - Wired magazine decidedly unwired to the Palestinian IT sector, a commentary by Nigel Parry.

20 October 1999 - Palestine gets top-level domain, Birzeit issues first report on growth of Palestinian websites - On 11 October 1999, Dr. Ghassan Z. Qadah, Senior Technology Advisor to the Palestinian Authority, and Supervisor General of the Palestinian Government Computer Center announced that Palestine has finally been granted a top-level domain (such as the .uk that concludes British domain names) after much lobbying of the Internet Registration Authority, International Standards Organisation (ISO), and the UN Offices in New York. A late arrival on the country code stage, Palestine has appropriately been granted the afterthought ".ps".

24 September 1999 - Birzeit University issued its first report on Palestine's Websites in 1999 - Birzeit's report details the growth and focus of local websites in the country, spanning four years. A Birzeit News item from 16 October 1999 reported on the Third Conference on IT in Education, which was featured in a 23 October show on its unique Internet radio station, Outloud.

8 July 1999 - Human Rights Watch distributed a press release reporting the publication of a new survey of online freedom of expression in the Middle East. Human Rights Watch logo The highly recommended report is entitled "The Internet in the Middle East and North Africa: Free Expression and Censorship" and is freely available to read online or download from HRW's website.


1 July 1999 - New Iranian search engine to watch - Check out IranMania at http://www.iranmania.com. It's a new start-up by Iranian expats based in Britian, but already its coverage of Iranian websites is the most extensive I have seen.
