![]() action & events Summer 2010 Appeal Nigel Parry, Monday, June 21st, 2010 I am writing to you on the eve of the U.S. Social Forum, from a warehouse loft in Detroit's Eastern Market district. For someone whose activism has often had a strong international focus, this city is a stark reminder of the scale of social problems in the United States, with entire streets and city blocks of abandoned homes. I am in Michigan volunteering with "Tech House", a collective of people with computer and communications skills, that was formed to support what is the largest national gathering of people with progressive politics in the United States. NOW AVAILABLE: Full 60-minute footage smuggled from Mavi Marmara culturesofresistance.org, Friday, June 11th, 2010
A full hour of raw footage taken aboard the Mavi Marmara in the hour leading up to and during the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla has just been made available. Despite the Israeli government’s efforts to confiscate all of the footage taken during the attack, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE filmmaker Iara Lee was able to smuggle one hour of footage back to the United States and is releasing it raw to the public today. Gaza Freedom March calls for governments, civil society action against Israel in wake of massacre of unarmed activists Gaza Freedom March, Monday, May 31st, 2010
Calling the Israeli military's killing of 16 international peace activists an unprovoked massacre, the Gaza Freedom March is calling on governments and civil societies around the world to both demand a full accounting and take action against what is now widely recognized to be an apartheid regime. In the early morning hours (Israeli time) on May 31, Israeli commandos surrounded then forcibly boarded one of the eight "Freedom Flotilla" ships en route to the Gaza Strip with more than 800 peace activists and politicians and 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid. The attack on the Freedom Flotilla occurred in international waters, 75 miles off the coast of Israel. Israelis Kill 3, Injure Dozens in Assault on Gaza Ship Convoy Carrying Humanitarian Aid Free Gaza Movement, Sunday, May 30th, 2010
Israeli commandos surround convoy, fire live ammunition upon Mavi Marmara, with hundreds of aid workers and activists aboard, including Chicago activist Fatima Mohammadi. Live video from the flotilla shows Israeli naval commando vessels pulling alongside the aid ships, and what sounds like gunfire can be heard in the background. No-one on the aid ships is carrying any kinds of weapons, including for defense against a feared Israeli attack in international waters. Letter sent to the Presbyterian Church to negate the Simon Wiesenthal Center's anti-BDS spam campaign Nigel Parry, Thursday, February 25th, 2010
The Simon Weisenthal Center has set up a spam tool—of which not one single letter of their text can be changed—to pressure the Presbyterian Church not to approve a BDS campaign against Israel. I wrote to elders of the Church myself, with a refutation of the letter, and an appeal for them to support the campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions as the only right thing to do. Video: Protesting Israeli racist and ethnic cleansing advocate Efraim Eitam @ Pittsburgh Hillel Nigel Parry, Thursday, February 4th, 2010
Hillel hosted former Israeli Knesset member Efraim Eitam's Jewish National Fund-sponsored event. Many from Pittsburgh's peace and justice community came out to protest his speech. This ten minute video records speakers from the street protest, and documents the arrival of school buses carrying young Jewish high school students who are one of the main target audiences of the "Caravan for Democracy" tour. Letter to Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs about Egypt's actions against convoys to Gaza Nigel Parry, Wednesday, January 6th, 2010
In the last month, I have watched with horror as Egypt has denied entry to both the Gaza Freedom March convoy and the Viva Palestina convoy, deployed riot police to stop protests against this indefensible measure in both Cairo and Al-Arish port, while grossly misrepresenting its activities on the website of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. [...] Egypt's treatment of the two December convoys has brought a little-known fact to the forefront of the debatethat the government of Egypt is very obviously 100% complicit in the Israeli siege. |
