Julia Roberts' Smile (This Side of Paradise, 2001)

A song about incarnational reality, Julia Roberts' Smile was written in 1994 after seeing the film The Pelican Brief. I was struck at the end of the film when the character played by Julia Roberts smiles to herself, having successfully accomplished something amazing against incredible, life-threatening odds, and yet no one knew that it was her that did it. This is the smile of God.

Final version of lyrics: Friday, July 1st, 1994

some people get up early to watch the sunrise
some people get up and walk for miles and miles
some people move out the city to live in the countryside
but i - i see his love in julia roberts' smile

men fly to the east and men sail to the west
some swear that home is where it's best
yesterday i met a man who swears he found it all inside
But i - i see his love in julia roberts' smile

in the city where it's close or in the mountains where it's high
something separates us from the love we feel inside
some search among their memories they had when they were a child
but i - I see his love in julia roberts' smile

some believe in what they see, some know all's not what it seems
some search in books and fairy tales, some chase it in their dreams
some seek it in casinos, they wonder just where it hides
but i - i see his love in julia roberts' smile

in a standing ovation or in a big parade
looking for a way to say the things we want to say
in fireworks and launching ships, in monuments and in festivals of light
but tonight I just want to celebrate julia roberts' smile
