Join the e-mail news list today! songs & lyrics Stage (This Side of Paradise, 2001) Stage was written after I started playing gigs regularly at university. It was a strange experience seeing how a bunch of people that you've never met before reacted to songs you had written. That's to say nothing about the reaction of the people you knew! One of the few recurring dreams I had went like this: I was going off to war, and got to the battlefield to find people I knew on the perimeter. "Where do you think are you going?" asks one, his face full of fear. "Who do you think you are?" sneers someone else. The remainder just looked away and ignored me. I turned to them and said, "What else are we here for? Who comes to a battle and isn't prepared to fight?", grabbed a weapon and set off. The dream wasn't specifically about music, but the experience of making the decision to play in a public certainly brought to mind the realities that live inside this dream that face anyone who tries to do anything in this world: Fear. Mockery. Indifference. Final version of lyrics: Monday, January 15th, 1990 Stage (This Side of Paradise, 2001) do i remind you of someone you think you once knew? or am i your broken mind, your drowning ophelia in the pool? i'm a train of thought i flow like rain i play fear research games, releasing all my pain. how can i tell the colour of your eyes when they're both closed? music makes more sense to me than flowers by a concrete road leave all your life behind, sometimes it seems that all these spirit diamonds aren't made from coal time spent here in front of you is time spent inside all our souls where i'm thinking forever i don't feel used i'm just not sure who's performing for who: sometimes its me but mostly it's you. in the labrynth landscapes in our mind, we build our shelters deep and hide forgetting that what we are frightened of, doesn't live outside. i'm a second of your life i will not die you clip your own wings, too afraid to soar, too scared to try. Mid-January 1990, London.
