Too Many Thoughts (This Side of Paradise, 2001)

This was a song written for a cousin I didn't meet until I was thirty years old, inspired by an exchange of conversation in a car during which I realized that something that had always made me feel disconnected from people was, in fact, a family trait, and not a bad thing at all.

Final version of lyrics: Tuesday, June 16th, 1998

Too Many Thoughts (This Side of Paradise, 2001)

the lakes are so peaceful tonight
that i can hear a distant roar of pain
that has followed me for years
and as I look across the car
and trees paint shadows on your face
a moment opens up into those same years.
staring out front just doesn't help
as your headlights kiss the ground ahead
soft and searching like the words you just released to me
and i realise i've caught a glimpse of part of me
that also lives inside of you
a part of me that i can put to rest - finally.
it's a shock to see how power frees
when it whispers something true
and while there's time
i need to say some things to you
so let's start with our trains of thought
i'm sure you'll smile and recognise
the spaghetti junctions that i mean
or how progress feels so slow
as if where you want to go
isn't down any road that you can see.
and i know sometimes it's so fucking hard
as pain stalks you like a thief
leaving confusion, isolation, fear.
but most of all i think you haven't realised
what's clear to all the rest of us
or maybe just to me.
or maybe just to me:

grace lives in you, light sings through you
with softness like a forest's dew
or a galaxy of stars to keep.
and deep inside, where your patience lies,
there's currents strong as ocean tides
although the surface troughs and peaks.
i'm speaking of the end of things
of raising sails to catch the winds
and breaking all these anchor ropes.
finally - know the rage you feel inside
that sometimes you try to deny
will one day give a nation hope.
all this to say:

there's too many thoughts to put into words
there's too many thoughts to put into words
thea, there's just too many thoughts to put into words
there's too many thoughts to put into words
