multimedia blog Art: "Australian Camouflage" Artist: Nigel Parry, Thursday, April 24th, 2008 ![]() Australian Camouflage is a simple piece that speaks of the birth of Australia as a penal colony by Britain in 1788, 220 years ago. Out of sight and out of mind, the prisoners shipped to Australia represented a "camouflaging" of both Britain's incarceration policy and its "undesirables" at a considerable cost to the indigenous Australian population. Believed to be around 350,000 at the time of settlement, the Aborigine population saw a massive decrease during the 150 years following British settlement—the result of newly-introduced infectious diseases, societal and cultural disintegration, forced re-settlement, and the removal of children from their families. "Australian Camoflage", Nigel Parry (2008), altered map. Statistics: Wikipedia.
