Art: Sand Sculpture at the 2007 Minneapolis Aquatennial
Photographer: Brian Struble, Saturday, July 28th, 2007
For several years a friend of mine, Brian, has entered the annual sand sculpture competition in the Minneapolis Aquatennial celebration. His team has won several times and I've always wanted to be there for one of the sculpture competitions to document it, perhaps with time lapse video. This year I wasn't able to be there for the 15 July 2007 event, but Brian took a number of excellent photos on the day. Brian is a jeweler, so he has a lot of experience sculpting on a micro level. This year, as well as staple team member and sculptor Dave Wyrick, Tilsner Artists' Cooperative potter Texas Teena joined the team. Did they win? Read on....

BUILDING CASTLES IN THE SAND

When you meet Dave Wyrick, you know instinctively that this is a man who doesn't fuck about. Here, Dave prepares a visual reference for the building process.

The finished design. Either of miniature beavers eating corn, or normal-sized beavers eating giant corn. You decide.
